Do you want to speed up your metabolism and lose some body fat? Here are 14 foods that you can eat that will help you do just that.

Of course, you will always lose more weight if you follow a balanced nutrition plan and regular work out routine. These foods that speed metabolism, burn excess fat, and turn it into energy that we can all use.

14 Foods that Speed Metabolism:

1. Coffee:

Coffee beans have been around for thousands of years. Before coffee became a popular drink, sheepherders noticed when their sheep ate the beans the animals became more productive.

Ground coffee has been used as beverage for over seven hundred years. The caffeine in coffee causes our metabolism to speed up.

2. Water: Water is essential to almost every metabolic process in your body. Inadequate amounts of water leads to your body's metabolism not performing at its maximum.

Filling up with water can suppress hunger. Although you would think this would cause water weight gain- it is actually the opposite. The more water you drink, the less you retain.

3. Rolled Oats:

Rolled oats are usually sold as oatmeal, and the main ingredient in granola and muesli.

Eating complex carbohydrates and fiber, found in rolled oats products, keep insulin levels low. Insulin sends messages to the body that it should store fat.

Keeping insulin levels low allows your metabolism to burn excess fat.

4. Whey Protein:

Whey protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow's milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids needed on a daily basis by the body.

In its purest form, it contains little or no fat, lactose, or cholesterol. Whey protein provides a healthy benefit in weight management.

5. Almonds: Almonds are the perfect snack. Nuts are high in metabolism-boosting protein and healthy fats.

6. Green Tea:

Green tea helps your body use more fat for energy. Drinking the tea provides weight loss benefits, along with anti-cancer and heart disease prevention.

Green tea leaves are packed with the chemical EGCG. New information suggests that catechin, the active ingredient in green tea, speeds up metabolism.

Research suggests that catechins improve thermogeneis, the body's production of energy from the digestive process.

7. Turkey: Turkey is a low fat, high protein food that can be readily used by your body to create more muscle.

Protein burns more calories than carbohydrates.

8. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Olive oil is one of the healthiest cooking oils.

The oil is low in calories and polysaturated fat, but very high in monounsaturated fat, which benefits your body.

Extra virgin olive oil is a step above "virgin olive oil." Created without the use of any chemicals, the acidity of extra virgin oil is very low, and contains no cholesterol.

9. Canola Oil: The use of healthy cooking oils helps you lose weight, and fight the aging process. Canola oil contains monounsaturated fat, which is called the "healthy heart fat."

Canola oil is low in saturated fat, considered "bad" fat, and rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, a key component of heart health.

10. Whole grains:

Complex carbs such as whole grains, and whole grain cereal have a metabolism boosting effect.

Fiber slows down the digestive process, which speeds your metabolism.

11. Berries:

Berries contain antioxidants that speed up metabolism, burn off fat, and provide energy. Raspberries speed up metabolism by tripling the normal level in your body. The brindleberry is known as an appetite suppressant.

13. Cayenne Pepper:

Capsaicin is a chemical found in cayenne peppers that causes the human body to release stress hormones and boost metabolism.

This action stimulates the body to produce more adrenaline. That causes your metabolism to work overtime and aids in burning calories.

14. Vegetables: 'Good' carbohydrates are found in vegetables. Choose vegetables such as broccoli, which is loaded with fiber. Foods high in fiber content speed metabolism.

All of the above 14 foods that speed metabolism are known for their ability to break up stored body fat. A diet including these foods will increase your energy level to help you lose weight.

  2. QUESTION:
What foods boot your metabolism and give you more energy?
I am trying to eat healthier and increase my exercise so that I may get down to a healthy weight and maintain it. I've heard that protein shakes are good for breakfast but don't really know anything about which ones are good. What foods or shakes will boost my metabolism and give me more energy?

    • ANSWER:
Nothing boosts your metabolism. There are many myths out there about metabolism. Your metabolism is the rate at which the cells in your body burn calories. The more active you become, the more your cells need calories and oxygen from your blood. The more active = the higher the calorie burn. Different cells in your body need different amounts of calories to operate. Hence, muscle burns more calories than a fat cell.

There are many other myths about metabolism. The best being, that as we age our metabolism slows down. Not true. The rate at which a muscle cell or fat cell burns energy (Calories) does not change. The make up of your body changes overtime (as we age, we spend more time sitting and doing nothing - at work, studying in college, watching your kids play basketball - instead of you playing softball).

  3. QUESTION:

    6. what else can boost the fat burning and raise metabolism?

    how bad is incorporating rice?
sorry for the spelling -i;m multitasking

    • ANSWER:
Girl, the first thing you should be doing to boost your metabolism is eating small, frequent meals.

Just digesting food requires you to expend energy, and your body interprets frequent eating as an indication that you are not starving.

      Why is this important?

Because thousands of years of evolution have primed your body to look for signs of impending famine -- and not eating is one of them. When your body thinks that you don't have enough food available because you aren't eating enough, it will begin to conserve energy by slowing your metabolism and holding on to fat. On the other hand, if it thinks you have plenty of food to eat, it will amp up your metabolism and release fat.

Also, by eating smaller meals, you'll be less likely to consume more calories than you body will need over the next 2-3 hours, which will reduce the likelihood of excess calories getting store as fat.

So in addition to the great foods that you names above, you need to make sure you are eating 5-6 small meals a day. A small meal is around 200-250 calories, which will add up to around 1500 calories a day.

When you do eat these small meals, try to always balance it out with some protein and a little good fat. So for instance, a cup of low-fat cottage cheese, an apple and a tablespoon of peanut butter would be a good, balanced meal. The protein and fat keeps your blood sugar in check and discourages you body from socking away calories as fat.

Other foods that may help boost metabolism include black coffee (no cream or sugar), black tea (unsweetened) and green tea.

Black tea is particularly interesting because recent research has shown that regular black tea consumption can reduce your body's tendency to store fat by reducing cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone that your body releases when under stress and it can cause the body to conserve fat. The people studied who consume tea regularly (three times a day) had lower abdominal fat than those who did not drink tea.

Finally, it's really important to make sure you're getting plenty of lean protein and complex carbohydrates in your meals. Lean protein includes low-fat dairy, chicken breast, tuna, seafood and fish, lean cuts of beef like top sirloin and filet, and lean pork like tenderloin. Egg whites and beans (kidney beans, pintos, white beans, garbanzo, etc) are also great protein sources with little or no fat. Oatmeal is one of the best complex carbs you can eat (in addition to fresh/frozen fruits and vegetables.)

Rice is fine in moderation provided it's brown rice, which has the fiber and hull still intact. You main goal is to eat your food in as "whole" of a state as possible -- this ensures you get all of the nutrients and fiber.

      Best of luck!

  9. QUESTION:
What foods are good for boosting the metabolism?
I was wondering what foods are good for metabolism boosting and gives you energy.

    • ANSWER:
yogurts and dairy foods definitely do not. They are healthy foods in moderation, but they actually make people gain more weight. They are good sources of calcium however.

Foods with antioxidants are great, though, as well as certain citrus fruits.

Pommegranites, cranberries, and blueberries are the best. These foods are also great for giving energy, loosing weight, and they help with slowing down the aging process.

  10. QUESTION:
What foods out there increase your metabolism?
Looking for foods that speed up metabolism and excersises that someone with advanced stages of emphysema and chronic broncitis can do without getting real short of breath. Can anyone help or suggest? Does yoga make you lose weight?

    • ANSWER:
There aren't any foods that will noticeably impact on your metabolism- this is simply a gimmick some fad diets use. You can however eat to lose fat, and exercise to speed metabolism.

Yoga isn't a big calorie burner- it's more for flexibility.

Losing 1-2lbs a week is the best way to go. This way, you are losing mostly fat, rather than water and muscle. Faster weight loss is not better, nor is it sustainable.

Diet should be what you look at first for weight loss- this is what will enable you to drop fat. Try a balanced diet made up of mostly natural whole foods, with high protein, moderate carbs and moderate fats.

You need to know how many calories you burn- you can use an online calculator for a rough estimate. Aim for 10-20% calories fewer than you burn daily (too large a deficit will be counterproductive in the longer term).

Don't worry about complicated diets or cutting things out. You can enjoy anything in moderation, as long as the majority of your diet is healthy.

      Base your meals around:

Lean protein (e.g. chicken, tuna, lean beef, fat-free cottage cheese, egg whites)
Wholegrains (e.g. wholewheat bread, oats, bran cereals, rice)
Healthy fats (e.g. nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocado, salmon, whole eggs, flaxseed)
      Fruit and veg

      And drink lots of water.

Second in importance to diet, is heavy resistance training- this is what will allow you to preserve muscle so you look 'toned' and defined once you've dropped the fat (rather than just a smaller version of how you look now, with the same bits you're unhappy with). More muscle also means a higher metabolism, so you definitely want to hold on to, or increase the muscle base you have, for fat loss.

You need to work ALL your major muscle groups- you can't spot reduce.

This is anaerobic exercise, so shouldn't make you short of breath.

You can look at extras like cardio to help create a calorie deficit, but cardio is by far the least important of these three, and you can lose fat effectively without it.

Make sure you're getting at least one rest day a week with no exercise at all.

  29. QUESTION:
    Foods for the metabolism?
I am reasonalby healthy but have a really slow metabolism, what are some foods that are good for this?

    • ANSWER:
      Hello

You have a problem that many of my clients have had to face. i have found that tools such as caffeine lose their benefits as soon as you go off them and are addictive and become a crutch.

The main issue with a slow metabolism is a slow Thyroid gland. This glands releases the hormones T3 and T4 and governs our metabolic rate. A great food for thyroid function and metabolism is coconut oil. One teaspoon 3x a day will work wonders.

The other factors you may have to address are adrenal stress, liver health and digestive health. the adrenal glands are the master stress glands of the body and if stress hormones are high, the thyroid gland will slow down metabolism. The livers role in all this is to convert our inactive thyroid hormones to active ones which increase metabolic rate. If the liver is toxic and backed up it will not perform this function effectively. the final factor is your digestive health.

If you have poor digestion you may have a leaky gut. This means food particles escape from the small intestine and get into your bloodstream and activate the immune system. While this is happening your thyroid will not produce enough hormones to keep metabolism high. the main foods that aggravate the small intestine are wheat and milk products so eliminate all of those for 2-4 weeks (except yoghurt) and see how you go!!

      Best of luck!

Also, if you really want to lose weight I strongly recommend you exercise. Just know that walking an extra few miles a day can really add up. Keep eating well and good luck.

      Grapefruit
This diet super fruit (above) lowers the insulin levels in your body that trigger your system to store fat. Plus, it is rich in fiber, and your body must burn extra calories in order to break it down.

      Green Tea
Green tea is the main source of epigallocatechin gallate, known better as EGCG. This healthy catechin speeds up your brain and nervous system, causing your body to burn more calories.

      Yogurt
The high levels of protein present in natural yogurt require a lot of energy to be processed. Plus, the pro-biotic cultures found in yogurt help regulate your digestive tract.

      Almonds
Almonds’ essential fatty acids help raise your body’s metabolism. Just don’t overdo it because they’re also very high in calories.

      Coffee
Coffee has caffeine, which does give you a boost. Just ensure that you don’t exceed 2 or 3 cups a day, or you risk a host of side effects, including irritability and jitters.

      Turkey
This protein-rich meat builds lean muscle tissue, which causes your body to burn extra calories and raises your metabolism.

      Apples
Like grapefruit, this low-calorie snack is high in fiber, which your body must burn calories to break down. Plus, since apples help you stay full for longer, you’ll eat less.

      Spinach
Popeye was right about one thing: spinach can help make you strong and healthy. In addition to speeding up your metabolism, it’s a great source of antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, iron and vitamin C.

      Beans
Low in fat and packed with protein, beans keep you full for long durations, and your body must burn extra calories in order to process this fiber-rich food.

      Jalapenos
The capcaisin found in jalapenos causes your body to burn extra calories for hours after you ingest them, speeding up both your heart rate and metabolism.

      Broccoli
Broccoli contains a highly effective metabolism-boosting team of nutrients: calcium and vitamin C. Calcium acts as a metabolic trigger, while vitamin C helps your body absorb more calcium

      Oatmeal
Because your body takes a long time to break down the fat-soluble fiber in oatmeal, this healthy food lowers your body’s insulin level and speeds up your metabolism as a result.

      Soy Milk
Fortified soy milk is loaded with calcium, which helps boost your metabolism. Just stay away from the sweetened varieties.

      Cinnamon
A little bit of cinnamon can go a long way. Add some zing to your daily cup of tea with this tasty spice to help your body metabolize sugars more effectively and maintain steadier blood sugar levels. Cinnamon can also help lower your cholesterol.

      Curry
Like jalapenos, curry increases the amount of calories your body burns and speeds up your metabolism.

  34. QUESTION:
    foods to speed up metabolism?

  35. QUESTION:
Foods that speed up metabolism and lower body fat?
i dont really eat that much meat (except for chicken occasionally) or dairy

    • ANSWER:
Unsweetened or sparingly sweetened tea is supposed to speed up metabolism. Tuna Fish (no mayo obviously) and Fish is good for you. Obviously fruits, vegetables, salad, rice, and that sort of food is great for you. It doesn't really come down to foods or drinks that speed up your metabolism or lower body fat, because as far as i know there aren't many or any at all. The best thing you can do is eat less, and eat healthier. Skinless chicken isnt bad, just don't do red meat. If you want to have something with ground beef, buy some ground turkey instead, tastes exactly the same, ground turkey might even taste better (drool)

And whatever the goal is, working out both aerobic and lifting weights will probably help! Hey Good luck!

  37. QUESTION:
    metabolism?
i heard spicy food raises your metabolism for 20 min. if i eat salsa or hot sause before a meal, will that raise my metabolism and therefore help burn fat?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi there!

If the salsa or hot sauce contains sugar, it will not help to raise your metabolism.

Moreover, it also depends on what else you are going to eat in that meal.

Some types of natural proteins will raise your metabolism and enable you to burn body fat. Whereas some foods such as processed (refined) carbohydrates can cause weight gain.

At the bottom of this reply, I have added two page links that provide free lists of foods that raise metabolism (and lists of foods that don’t) and other good ways in which you can raise your metabolism (such as specific exercises).

      I hope this helps.

All my best wishes to you.

  38. QUESTION:
Any ideas for foods to eat to help adjust metabolism to deal with high humidity?
I read somewhere online (sorry, don't know where) that proteins can affect the body's reaction to humid weather conditions (make the reaction worse). Are there any food groups or supplements that can help MINIMIZE the dehabilitating effect of high humidity on the human body? thanks.

    • ANSWER:
      I hear melons are good.
  39. QUESTION:
What foods are good for your metabolism?

    • ANSWER:
Proteins, in the sense that your body has to work the hardest in order to be able to break them down and convert them into energy. Eating a high protein meal stimulates your metabolism more than eating a high carbohydrate meal.
  40. QUESTION:
What foods do you eat to make you metabolism getter faster?
I am a endomorph and it seems like I exercise but I stay at the same weight level. I realized it is my eating habbits so I was wondering what foods would be best for me.

    • ANSWER:
I am an endomorph, too, so I know all about your troubles. Apparently endomorphs are naturally more insulin resistant than other types, so we have to watch our refined carbohydrate intake even more than other people do. We are at much higher risk for developing diabetes because of it.

In fact, following a diet intended for someone who is already diabetic might not be the worst way to go: lots of fruit and vegetables, lots of lean protein (beans, lentils, soy, fish, lean poultry), and plenty of whole grains and other complex carbohydrates. [Personally I am vegan, but that's pretty extreme for most people]

Watching sugar intake is vital. Ideally, you'd eliminate pre-packaged or pre-made desserts altogether, including pastries, cookies, candy, frozen desserts and sugar-sweetened juices and sodas. Instead you could have fruit, fruit smoothies, or any number of home-baked goods that use natural sweeteners like honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, rice or barley malt syrup, etc. If you need a recipe or two, I'd be happy to share.

As for exercise, you didn't really elaborate about what you're doing. I used to just walk and jog on my treadmill five days a week for 30-60 minutes, knees permitting, lol. It wasn't until I took up weight training (in addition) that the weight really started coming off. Endomorphs usually have large frames, and while this normally this isn't the coolest thing, it is when it comes to weight training. Our big frames can hold bigger muscles then say an ectomorphic marathon runner. It's pretty easy to put muscle on, actually, and this is what really helps with metabolism. I like Jari Love's "Get Ripped" DVD series since I'm too poor to afford a gym membership, lol.

      Best of luck!

  41. QUESTION:
what are some easy to find foods for...?
Well i need to no some easy to find super market foods that are SAFE and high in protein other than eggs.
Also I need to no some easy to find super market foods that can (boost your metabolism if theres such thing?)

Im doing a 5 hour day workout so I need quite a lot of protein enough for a 15 year old guy and I need High metabolism food boosts if its possible.

    • ANSWER:
Most cuts of beef (except ground beef) contain about 7 grams of protein per ounce, a 6 oz. steak contains 42 grams of protein, a 3.5 oz. chicken breast contains roughly 30 grams. Most fish contains 6 grams per oz., a can of tuna has about 40 grams of protein. Pork chops contain about 22 grams of protein. One egg has 6 grams, 1/2 cup cottage cheese has 15 grams, most beans have about 6-10 grams per cup. Tofu and soy beans contain 22 grams per half cup. A tablespoon of peanut butter has 4 grams, most nuts also have a lot protein.

  42. QUESTION:
What are the best foods to eat to kick-start your metabolism?
After moving to Kentucky, I packed on almost 20 pounds. I used to live in Minneapolis where I was a massage therapist and was able to bike thanks to the Twin Cities awesome trail system. Then, I was hired as a teacher in Kentucky where there are NO healthy restaurants, the school serves deep-fried EVERYTHING, and I have to SIT in front of a computer or with students most of the day. Worst of all, the area I live in is insanely dangerous for pedestrians on the road, and they have NO bike trails. It sucks, and I am moving back to Minneapolis in 3 weeks. I plan on beginning my summer "boot camp" for fitness and want to know what foods I can consume that would aid in upping my metabolic rate to burn more calories when I work out. Thanks!

  48. QUESTION:
    what foods boost your metabolism?
    for weight loss?

    • ANSWER:
What you can control about your metabolism: Diet

Don’t eat fewer than 1,000 calories a day. Your body and metabolism
thrive on food. When you fast or crash diet, your metabolism will slow
down in order to conserve energy. Imagine your metabolism as a blazing
fire. If the fire burns consistently with the appropriate amount of
high-quality wood, it will burn at a steady rate. But if it doesn’t
have enough wood, the fire goes out. If it has too much wood, it can
get out control — just like your waistline!
Eat every four to five hours. Our bodies work hard to digest and
absorb the foods we eat, and your metabolism revs up in response.
This is called the thermic effect of food. Take full advantage of this
and schedule meals and snacks every four to five hours.
Make breakfast a priority. Studies show that people who regularly eat
a healthy breakfast within two hours of rising are more likely to
control their weight. This may be because you’re lifting your
metabolic rate after it’s been in a “resting phase” during the night.
Eat protein with every meal: All foods create a thermic effect and
will slightly boost your metabolism. However, eating protein gives
your body a bigger metabolic boost than eating carbohydrates or fats.
Plus, eating enough protein will ensure you’ll maintain and build
muscle mass. (Remember, the more muscle mass you have, the greater
your metabolic rate). Make sure to incorporate lean protein into most
      every meal.
Best protein sources: fish, chicken breast, turkey breast, lean red
meat, skim milk, nonfat yogurt, eggs and egg substitutes, tofu, beans,
      and lentils.

      Meal Examples:

      Breakfast: yogurt with fresh fruit
Lunch: turkey burger on whole-grain bun and a salad
Dinner: grilled chicken with vegetables and a baked potato

  49. QUESTION:
Is it true that we should eat bad-for-you foods every so often to challenge our metabolism?
Some guy at my gym claims that if you eat poorly once every 10-14 days it is actually good for your metabolism and making it work harder and ultimately making it better at burning calories. Is this for real?

I eat very healthy and almost never eat fast food, non whole grains or anything deep fried, am I making my metabolism lazy?

    • ANSWER:
not one bit...however when following a reduced calorie diet it's good to overfeed periodically like every 4-5 weeks. overfeeding is consuming a caloric excess in the diet which helps to keep leptin levels normal. leptin is very important hormone that regulates fatty acid metabolism. when leptin is low fat loss slows/halts.

there is nothing healthy about heavily processed foods. you don't need to consume crap in the diet just to create a caloric excess, that's just the easy/lazy way to do it. you would want to consume more whole foods

  50. QUESTION:
Would you Please list your favorite foods that raise one's metabolism?
Want to maintain my slim figure during these winter months, coz it gets a little too cold to even leave the house for exercising sometimes....so figure I'd atleast eat all the type foods that would raise metabolism, ect.
    thx

    • ANSWER:
Do you have room to workout at home? I have a gym set up in my house. Nothing fancy either - dumb bells, stability balls, workout mat, barbell and plates, videos and books. You still need to exercise or you will lose muscle and that will cause your metabolic rate to drop. Plus - it is unhealthy for your mind and body to not exercise.

If you are short on room, you can use your own body as resistance or you can get a set of resistance bands.

As far as foods that raise your metabolism, keep it lean and natural - no sugars, soy products, or bad carbs. Unless you burn the food you eat, it will end up being stored as fat regardless so you must exercise. Eating healthy foods will raise your metabolism, but you do have to burn those calories or you wil gain weight. Some studies have shown that spicy foods, peppers, and protein can give your metabolic rate a boost, but not enough to keep your weight in check without exercise.

      Good luck.
