Do Push Ups to Build Muscle Mass and Boost Metabolism

Author: Rick West

Having spent many years doing many different workouts involving weights, cardiovascular machines, and calisthenics, I determined that the best way to build mass and boost metabolism is by doing pushups. Lots of pushups! After less than three months training, I was able to complete a one-thousand pushup routine in exactly 80 minutes. I gained 15 lbs of solid muscle mass, lost a considerable amount of body fat and consistently ate 5000-6000 calories daily.

Calisthenics, like pull-ups and pushups, are commonly avoided because they can be extremely painful. Because strength training exercises are typically anaerobic, with few exceptions, the body produces a high amount of lactic acid, thus causing a burning sensation in the muscles. Coupled with physical and mental exhaustion, an abundance of lactic acid can persuade even the hardest of athletes to give it a rest. Remember that your body will prevail, as long as you maintain your mental strength.

To begin, I would recommend a routine consisting of no more than 100-200 pushups, spread out over an entire day. Break them down into even sets, of say 20 pushups per set. Whenever you feel confident in yourself, drop to the floor and pound out a quick set. If 20 pushups are too many when you begin, then do more sets consisting of fewer repetitions per set. Do not concern yourself with the amount of time it takes to complete the first few workouts, just make sure you drink a lot of water and eat a lot of high protein food throughout the day. The day following your first pushup workout, your chest, stomach, shoulders and legs will be sore. It will become apparent just how many muscle groups are worked when doing pushups. Take 2-3 days rest.

The secret to building the endurance strength necessary to do extremely large numbers of repetitions is to strategize with your own body. The workouts need to be strategically spaced apart and sometimes stacked together to maximize results.

The second workout should be the same as the first, however do not take a 2-3 day rest after the workout. Instead of taking a long break, work out every other day, until you no longer get sore the day after. It may take a few weeks in order to be comfortable doing 200 pushups every other day. Do not lose sight of your goal. Remember that pain is a result of muscle wear and recovery, and should mentally represent progress, not a limitation. It will never go away, but it will greatly diminish over time as your body adjusts.

The third stage requires that you compress your workout into a set time interval. For the sake of example, let's say one hour. Find a comfortable number of repetitions that you feel that you will be able to repeat until you have reached your daily goal of 200 pushups. In this example, we'll do 10 repetitions. This workout will consist of 20 sets of 10 repetitions. 20 sets, evenly divided across 60 minutes means that you will need to do one set of 10 pushups every three minutes. Make sure that whatever goal you choose is achievable, and also poses a challenge. Repeat this routine every other day, until it becomes comfortable.

Because your muscles will quickly become fatigued doing calisthenics, it is very difficult to continually add more reps or sets to your workout. The easiest and most successful method [in my opinion] for building endurance is stacking workouts. By stacking, I mean completing the same workout more than one time in less than a 24 hour period. During the fourth stage, complete a 200 pushup routine in the morning and in the evening, followed by a day of rest. Once again, just like the previous stages, do this routine until your body becomes comfortable- this should only take a couple of weeks. At which point, you will complete the workout stacking, by coupling the two sessions into one two-hour session, consisting of 40 sets of 10 pushups, totaling 400 pushups. My buildup workouts include two sessions of 300-500 pushups apiece, followed by a day of rest. Note that you should not work the same muscle group two days in a row without rest. This method gave my body time to rest and refuel between sessions without going completely into recovery mode.

If your body responds quickly and you start to build considerable muscle mass in a short period of time, which I'm sure you will, the next thing to do is increase the number of repetitions per set and decrease the amount of time between sets. I would recommend a goal of 25-30 reps per set, beginning one set every 2 minutes. If done gradually, the workout compression can be very smooth and your 400-pushup routine can be completed in 32 minutes. It sounds very difficult, but it is achievable.

Now that you have the tools; timing your sets, timing your workouts and adding reps, you can pull the strings and make the workout work for you. If you have any difficulty in any particular aspect that prevents further gains, use the other techniques to manipulate your body into cooperating. For example, if you cannot add more reps to your sets, do more sets, or if you cannot do more sets, do two larger workouts spaced apart from one another.

Two important things to remember when doing mass building exercises such as pushups are; drink lots of water and eat lots of high protein food throughout the day. When doing my one-thousand pushup routine, I drink at least one full gallon of water daily to avoid dehydration and joint fatigue. Good luck!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    boost metabolism?
what can i do/take to boost my metabolism and burn fat ( herbal/natural foods remedies preferably)?
    thanks

    • ANSWER:
Dropping your calorie intake below 1,000 calories a day will signal to your body that you are in starvation mode, and will slow down your metabolism. So you won't want to do that.

      Eat smaller meals more frequently.

Smaller, more frequent meals keeps your blood sugar stable and provides a steady source of energy to fuel metabolism.

      Get enough aerobic exercise.

As much as you can is really a help for your metabolism, and if you do it in the morning, you'll raise your metabolism all day.

Build muscle with weight training or resistance exercise.

At least two to three times a week, you should add weight training or progressive resistance exercise that builds muscle. Muscle burns more calories than fat, and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest!

      Water, water, water!!

You've heard it before, but drink those 8 8-ounce glasses of water every day. The energy burning process of metabolism needs water to work effectively.

      Get enough B vitamins.

Among supplements, if you are suffering from flagging energy, you need to make sure that you are getting enough B vitamins. Vitamin B-12 in particular is one that is essential for energy. To ensure you're getting enough B vitamins, consider taking a B complex, plus a separate sublingual B-12.

      Try a supplement for fatigue.

Another type of supplement useful for fatigue is in the area of substances that the body naturally produces for energy production. Supplements in this category include:

      * Co-enzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, which supplies energy to muscles
      * L- Carnitine
      * NADH (Nicotinamide Adenine Finucleotide) which helps cells convert food into energy
      * Green Tea extract

      Try Chinese Herbs

In terms of herbal remedies, while you should avoid ephedra and ma huang stimulants, you can ask your practitioner about schizandra--a Chinese herb that is used for fatigue. Ginseng is also popular for energy. Before trying any herbs, supplements, or vitamins, you should of course consult with your practitioner to ensure they are safe for you. Ginseng, for example, is not recommended for someone with high blood pressure and many herbs and supplements are not recommended during pregnancy.

      Try mate tea

In the process of writing my book, Living Well With Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You...That You Need to Know, I had the opportunity to interview herbal and aromatherapy expert Mindy Green of the Herbal Research Foundation. I asked her what, as a person with hypothyroidism, I should reach for when I'm just completely out of steam, and am ready for a giant double espresso in order to make it through the day. Mindy, said, unquestionably, mate tea. Mate, pronounced, "mah-tay," is an herbal tea native to South America. Mate is considered far more nutritious than black tea or coffee, and though it also has some caffeine, its effects are energizing, rather than making people jittery.

      Consider Energy Work

Energy and bodywork , such as yoga, tai chi, qigong (pronounced chee-gung), and Reiki, can all help in adding and balancing energy. In qigong, tai chi, and yoga, gentle movements are used to move energy along the energy pathways of the body. In Reiki, a practitioner helps open up energy channels.

  2. QUESTION:
    Boost metabolism?
What is a healthy easy way to boost your metabolism ?

    • ANSWER:
This question is asked by a different person EVERY DAY! Try searching the questions and see what other answers you can get!

The best way to boost metabolism is moderate aerobic exercise and lifting weights. Muscles burn more calories, even at rest, so increasing muscle mass slightly will increase your calorie burn. For the aerobic exercise, I recommend running, because your legs has the largest muscle group of your body. Also lift free weights 3 times a week to tone (not necessarily build) your biceps, triceps and shoulders. You can search for places on the Internet, or a women's magazine can tell you different techniques to use.

  3. QUESTION:
    Boost Metabolism?
Does anyone know of any herbs, medication, etc that can help boost your metabolism. I seem to lack energy and other than having slightly high cholesterol, my doctor found nothing medically wrong as to why I am sluggish. I have begun exercising and changed my diet yet I have no energy. I am 44 yrs old, 5'5, 170 pounds african american female.

    • ANSWER:
You dont need to really go out and buy anything actually...
all you need to do is eat 6 times a day (3 small meals and 3 snacks in between each , aproximately every 2-3hrs you'll eat)
so yea portion your food and doing this will keep you metabolism up and it will also keep you healthy and even lose weight if need so...
so yea just eat every 2-3hrs ok
just try it and if doesnt work (which it will) then you can go out and buy what you want

  4. QUESTION:
what is the fastest way to boost metabolism?
im 14 very active but have a slower metabolism...i want any ways to boost metabolism. any means necessary.

    • ANSWER:
Well, there is no fast way. Studies show that you can shift your metabolism more toward fat-burning away from carb-burning with an hour of cardio workout 3 times a week. But the shift isn't huge. Also, look into high-intensity interval training. Search that on google and you will find lots of info. It isn't magic, so don't let anyone talk you into buying anything. It is a workout concept where you go as hard as you can on most any cardio type exercise (running, elliptical, road bike, stationary bike, treadmill, stair stepper, etc.) for about 30 seconds. I mean really push yourself to the limit for that short time. Then back off to a slower rate of the same exercise until you catch your breath and you can go hard again (maybe 4 minutes, less when you get in better shape). Do that for 5 cycles or so, about a half hour total. Studies show that beginning exercisers respond more quickly to high-intensity interval training of this kind than to a more steady cardio training approach, like jogging or biking at one speed. That's true even if you work out for a shorter total time.

But remember, there are no fast solutions or easy solutions, nor can you really change your metabolism a lot. Anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong.

  5. QUESTION:
What is an excellent way to boost metabolism naturally?
I am in a weight loss competition and I suffer from low metabolism. I am told it is because I have a tendency to skip meals and allow myself to become dehydrated.

What is a great way to help boost my metabolism?

    • ANSWER:
To up your metabolism you need to exercise every day- since it's a competition, I'd do AT LEAST 45 minutes of cardio (I do an hour) and also strength training (weight lifting). Then, as far as eating, eat breakfast, as well as a small meal every 4 hours. As was said, don't eat "white" things (simple, refined carbohydrates). Eat only whole, natural foods. Stay as far away from sugar as possible. Drink only water and green tea (be sure to swish your mouth with water, or better yet brush your teeth afterwards because tea stains your teeth). Don't eat anything within 3 hours of going to sleep at night.
      Godspeed!

  7. QUESTION:
What are the best foods that boost metabolism?
    What is metabolism?
What are the best foods that improve and boost metabolism?
What are the factors that influence metabolism?

A couple of paragraphs should help clear things up.
    Please & Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
The undisputed champion of food that clears out your metabolism is a prune. That's right, prunes will empty you right out. This one time, Harold was sitting on his comfy sofa at home when he heard a rumbling in his tummy.

      OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

It sounded like a ravenous ravenous rhinoceros. Something had to be done immediately before the new episode of Glee came one. So Harold went poking through his neighbor's cabinet (Harold has key for emergencies like these) and found some nice wrinkled purple fruit. Harold stuffed it in his mouth and let the sweet juices drip down his chin. Delicious!
Suddenly, Harold felt the effects of this forbidden fruit. He dashed to his neighbor's master bathroom and set up camp there for the night. That issue of Reader's Digest was all that kept Harold company in those long hours of spicy diarrhea. Then Harold had to sacrifice it as toilet paper because his inadequate neighbor wasn't well stocked. It was painful. But afterward Harold felt sooooo relieved. Then he remembered that he missed Glee. Harold cried all night.

  8. QUESTION:
What are the best foods to boost metabolism and to burn fat?
Which foods are the best to burn fat and boost metabolism?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Gokor!

For fat burning and increased energy, you can boost your metabolism in several good ways. There are foods to eat, foods to avoid, a pattern of eating, and specific exercises that will all work to boost your metabolism if done properly. The methods work well together and they are sustainable long term.

First, eat a meal about every 3 waking hours (5 or 6 meals per day). You will not be eating more food; you will simply be spreading it throughout the day. Each of those 5 or 6 feedings should contain at least 15 grams of unprocessed protein (from natural sources) for a female or at least 20 grams per feeding for a male. Also, drink plenty of water. Increase your intake daily until you are consuming at least 3 quarts daily--and one gallon daily would be better.

Second, eliminate processed (refined) carbohydrates from your diet. Processed (refined) carbohydrates have negative effects on health. They can also cause weight gain and slow down metabolism. When digested all carbohydrates turn into sugar, and sugar becomes fat. So, think of eating carbohydrates as eating sugar and think of eating processed (refined) carbohydrates as eating concentrated sugar.

If you want to boost your metabolism to lose body fat, allow yourself only 40 to 70 grams of carbohydrates daily. Get those carbohydrates from natural sources such as (preferably organic) fresh vegetables and low carb fruits. There is no minimum daily requirement for carbohydrates, but they do have many beneficial phytochemicals and fiber so eating some is fine (as long as they are unprocessed).

Third, begin a program of mild fitness exercise (cardio) such as brisk walking. For example, today go for a walk at the best pace you can manage until you are comfortably tired. Note how far you walked. The day after tomorrow, go for another walk but increase the distance slightly. Continue walking every other day until you are walking 4 miles. Once you are able to do that, slightly increase your pace with each walk until you are walking those 4 miles in just under 1 hour every other day. This will burn many extra calories during an immediately after your walks.

Fourth, begin a strength training program to increase your lean muscle mass. Lean muscle is a METABOLIC FURNACE that will burn extra calories 24 HOURS DAILY. Male or female, young or old, everyone can lose body fat this way.

At the bottom of this reply, I have added page links to Internet resources for free lists of fat burning foods that boost metabolism, lists of foods that slow down metabolism, a choice of free walking for weight loss plans, and free strength training programs for beginners or intermediates.

I hope this helps you, Gokor.

      All my best wishes.

How many bottles of green tea does it take to boost metabolism?
Or does it boost metabolism? If not, what is it good for health wise?

    • ANSWER:
The best way to boost your metabolism is to exercise. Try exercising for 20-30 min at a time, at least 3 days a week. Increase this in length and frequency.

  11. QUESTION:
What are some things to boost metabolism?
I have been drinking a lot of diet green tea and grapefruit juice, and I've been doing cardio for about 20 minutes 5 days out of the week. I haven't ate snacks either. But I have only lost 1 pound. Are there any specific foods or vitamins or other drinks or workouts that can boost my metabolism? Or should I just wait a little longer for results??

    • ANSWER:
First off, snacks are important to speeding up your metabolism. You should be eating 5-6 times a day. Not full meals mind you. It can be either 3 regular size meals and 2-3 healthy snacks, or it can be 5-6 small meals. If you don't provide your system with enough nutrients then it thinks it is being starved and it will hold every calorie that you take it and store it for fat.

So eat, eat often, just eat healthy. Also, you can take chromium picolinate. It's supposed to speed up metabolism and help to regulate blood sugar. I've had good success with it in the past and it doesn't have any bad side effects as it's natural, not a diet pill.

      Good luck.

    • ANSWER:
How to Increase (speed up) Metabolism

To boost metabolism, do not skip any meals. Eat 5-6 small meals during the day. Starving will slow down your metabolism.

      Exercise daily

Build your muscles. Do you Know: 1 pound of fat burns only 2 calories a day while 1 pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day !!! The more muscle you build, the faster your metabolism will be, and the more calories you will burn while at rest. When muscle mass decreases, the metabolic rate also drops.

      Avoid alcohol, sugar, and fastings

Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.

Eat foods with high nutrition values

Take apple cider vinegar+honey+garlic. It is good for increasing metabolism.

  20. QUESTION:
How can you boost your metabolism?
any ways that can boost metabolism.

    • ANSWER:
      (1) Drink room-temperature water first thing in the morning. It doesn't have to be a lot, a couple of sips will do. This helps "prime" your stomach for the day. Ice-cold water is terrible, I repeat terrible, for your stomach in general.

      (2) Eat a healthy breakfast. "Healthy" being foods that your body doesn't have problems digesting. If you get gassy, stomach aches, or notice that you have terrible skin you're probably eating foods you're allergic to. Allergies wreak havoc on the digestive system and therefore your metabolism (because your body invests its energy supply in the over-taxed immune system instead of your metabolism).

      (3) Exercise. You don't have to work out a lot. In fact, walking for 20-30 minutes three times a week is good enough to jump start your metabolism. Unless you're not a lean or muscular person. Then you should work on strength training and muscle toning exercises. The more muscle you have, the better (faster) your metabolism is.

      (4) Don't starve yourself. When you starve yourself, your body stops burning calories - which causes your metabolism to slow down.

      Good luck.

  21. QUESTION:
Is there a natural, unharmful (in any way) herbal supplement that helps boost metabolism?
I have a very low metabolism despite eating fairly healthy and getting 20 min of cardio excerise everyday. Is there an herbal supplement (in capsule form- no horrible tasting liquid) that will give my energy a boost? Also, do you know of any healthy remedies for a quick-fix to low energy?

    • ANSWER:
Hops are a very useful supplement. However, they are useless in their natural state.

It is only when they have been through the beer fermenting process that their properties become apparent. Caution, it is only effective in liquid form and so must be drunk in large quantities.

Apparently, there can unfortunately be some severe side effects such as dizziness, bloating, vomiting and headaches.
It must help with the metabolism as having drunk this remedy I have often bounced around rooms and walls before running to the toilet.

However, I have perservered with this natural treatment for many years and I seem to be in good health, so I presume it works!!

  22. QUESTION:
Does eating every three hours really boost metabolism?
I've heard that eating small meals and snacking on healthy foods in portions every three hours boosts the metabolism and helps you burn more fat than any other diet plan.

    Is this true?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, it's true. Although the boost isn't enormous, the benefits of adopting this habit are more than just higher metabolism. You also balance your blood sugar, which gives you sustained energy and endurance. It also controls hunger which helps you keep in control of your food choices.

The most important thing to remember is to always have a source of protein with every meal. So like a slice of cheese and an apple. Or a handful of walnuts and an orange. Or a small salad but with a little skinless chicken thrown in. Protein is key.

  23. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:

  24. QUESTION:
A good herbal supplement to boost metabolism/help shed 5lbs?
I am a mom just trying to lose 5-7 pounds, struggling to find the time to exercise but I WILL do it. I do not want a fad diet or anything like that, just wondering if anyone can recommend a multivitamin or product that is safe, natural, good for you, to help maybe just give my metabolism a bit of boost or whatever.

    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
The truth is, the only thing out there that is actually regulated by the FDA is Alli, and I don't recommend it for a low weight loss.

Your best bet is to simply reduce what you eat for a week or two, cut out sodas, sugary snacks, stop eating when you are full.

The problem with any diet pill or herbal suppliment, is that you'll have to stop taking it and go back to where you were before you took the suppliment to begin with. Exercise isn't even required, it's just a matter of cutting your calories a little bit here and there. If you start exercising later on, that should keep the weight from coming back at that point.

You can safely loss 2 lbs of weight per week, so it'll only take you about 3 weeks to lose what you want. Since you're a mom, there's probably lots of tempting snacks around, but my trick is to drink water when I feel like munching on something, and it usually works. At dinner, I'll skip the bread rolls and butter or drink unsweet tea instead of soda pop. There are probably a few places that if you cut back just a little here and there, it'll help you lose the weight you want :)

      Best of luck to you!

  26. QUESTION:
How do I boost my metabolism?
Whats an easy cost free way to boost metabolism?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi, there!

Here are several good ways in which you can boost your metabolism. The methods work well together and they are sustainable long term. There are foods to eat, foods to avoid, a pattern of eating, and specific exercises that will all help to boost your metabolism. I'll begin with eating and then move on to exercise.

This change alone, as long as long as quality, unprocessed, PROTEIN is included, such as wild caught fish, organic chicken, grass-fed beef, etc (unless you are vegetarian), will boost your metabolism and curb any food cravings.

Second, eliminate all processed (refined) carbohydrates from your diet. Processed (refined) carbohydrates have negative effects on health. They can also cause weight gain and slow down your metabolism.

Processed (refined) carbs are such things as ice cream, bread, rolls, buns, pasta, tacos, potato chips/crisps, pizza, cakes, sweets, candy, cookies, biscuits, chocolate, cereals, store bought cooked meats/cold cuts (they have added sugars and additives), sausages/hot dog frankfurters (they have carbohydrate fillers, additives, and sometimes sugar) all sodas (including diet sodas), sugars, and foods containing corn syrup, etc.

When digested all carbohydrates turn into sugar, and sugar becomes fat. Therefore, think of eating carbohydrates as eating sugar and think of eating processed (refined) carbohydrates as eating concentrated sugar.

If you want to lose body fat, allow yourself only 40 to 70 grams of carbohydrates daily. Get those carbohydrates from natural sources such as (preferably organic) fresh vegetables and low carb fruits. There is no minimum daily requirement for carbohydrates, but they do have many beneficial phytochemicals and fiber so eating some is fine (as long as they are unprocessed).

At the bottom of this reply, I have included page links for free Internet resources that will show you what foods to eat and what foods to avoid if you wish to lose body fat.

Third, drink plenty of water. Increase your intake daily until you are consuming at least 3 quarts daily--and one gallon daily would be better.

Fourth, begin a program of mild fitness exercise (cardio). At the bottom of this reply, I have added a page link to an Internet resource for a free Walking for Weight Loss plan.

Fifth, begin a strength training program to increase your lean muscle mass. Lean muscle is a METABOLIC FURNACE that will burn extra calories 24 HOURS DAILY. Male or female, young or old, everyone can lose body fat this way. At the bottom of this reply, I have included Internet resources for free programs suitable for beginners or more advanced.

Work out twice a week using as much weight as you can handle using perfect exercise technique. Concentrate only on the basic exercises such as squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, and chins. The free programs will give you specific routines as well as tips for exercising safely.

There is more that you could do. For example, intense cardio for three minutes twice a week, but that may be too much for you too quickly. It is better to focus on making one major change at a time. Then introduce the next one. You could add intense cardio later. If you try to make too many major changes simultaneously, you will likely be frustrated and quit.

(Before altering your exercise habits, you may wish to obtain the blessing of your personal physician.)

If you want to use any or all of those methods to boost your metabolism, the links to the free Internet resources will give you more in-depth information, plus free walking for weight loss plans, mild and intense cardio exercise choices, free strength training programs, diets, fat burning foods, and carbohydrate charts. They are all good and they are all free.

I hope this information helps you.

      All my best wishes.

  33. QUESTION:
What are some ways to boost your metabolism?
What are some foods and activities that can boost your metabolism? Other than vitamins.
Please, no lame or immature replies.

    • ANSWER:
      1. Exercise
Exercise will help you burn excess calories and fat, increase metabolism and will also help to tone and build muscle.

      2. Drink lots of water per day. Water keeps your body hydrated, removes wastes and toxins and aids the process of food digestion.

      3. Eat high fiber food, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes (such as beans and lentils), and whole grains. The fiber in whole grains and fruits will make you feel fuller longer, helping you avoid overeating and maintaining a healthy colon.

      4. Do not eat any meal at least three hours before bedtime. When sleeping, the body’s metabolism is slower, so the nutrients and calories that may be produced end up being stored in some body areas as fat deposits.

      5. Don’t Skip Meals. By skipping meals, Your body goes into starvation mode and the body’s metabolism slows down during the long gap in between meals. Thus, there is more time for fat production.

      6. Eat slowly. Eating slowly also helps with digestion and gives your brain time to realize that it is full, which will keep you from being hungry after you’ve just eaten.

      7. Eat small meals throughout the day. Every time you eat something, your metabolism ramps up to process the food. The more frequently you eat, the more frequently your metabolism will get a boost.

      8. Reduce Your Fat Intake. Fatty foods take longer for your body to digest and they leave you feeling fuller longer

      9. Get Enough Sleep. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your body never gets the chance to refresh itself in preparation for a new day and you end up being too exhausted to function efficiently. As a result, your metabolism slows down.

      10. Increase the protein in your diet. When the body is metabolism and burning fats, it naturally burns up carbohydrates first so that there would be energy to keep on going. So when carbs run out, the body would use other sources. It can use muscles in replacement for carbs. Thus, increasing protein is recommend in order to prevent muscle loss and shift your metabolism to fat burning instead. Eating more protein will also help regulate your appetite.

      11. Limit sugary foods, salt, and refined-grain products. ugar is added to a vast array of foods. In a year, just one daily 12-ounce can of soda (160 calories) can increase your weight by 16 pounds.

      12. Low glycemic carbohydrates will increase your metabolism, and they have less calories per unit volume of fat. Some foods with low glycemic load include broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, green beans, peanuts, low-fat yogurt, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, peas, grapefruit, canned peaches, soy milk, pearled barley, dried apricots, cooked carrots and spaghetti.

  34. QUESTION:
What can i do to boost my body metabolism?
I want to boost my body metabolism. Is it okay to take supplement or is there any effective diet to boost body metabolism?

    • ANSWER:
Here's a post off my blog that may be of help to you it about Fat Burning Foods...

Fat burning foods refer to specific type of foods that either burn fats accumulated in the body or improve metabolism. Adding these types of foods in your regular diet, you can easily wash out the fat from your body and keep yourself fit and healthy.

Fat burning foods and exercises are the ideal solution for individuals who are on a weight loss program. Foods that burn more calories than the amount of calories contained in the food itself are also known as fat burning foods.

fat burning foods that burn more calories during digestion then they contain are generally high in two things, fiber and water. Celery is a good example. fat burning foods, or negative calorie foods, are supposed to be so low in calories that digesting these foods burn more calories than they contain.

Fat burning foods are readily available and will definitely fit into your budget as well. Fat burning foods not only helps us to lose weight naturally but also increase our body rate of weight loss. So include these foods in your daily diet helps speed up weight loss, build a healthier body and put you on the road to a healthier lifestyle.

Plus eating every 2-3 hours is the basis of a good fat burning diet because it helps keep your metabolism burning your fat stores and also you do not have to concentrate on the food you’re taking in. Lack of activity combined with lack of attention to diet causes your body then ignores fat stores and works on what you are eating, packing the rest of the excess calories away for a rainy day since it feels you are not eating frequently enough.

Try eating some of the following fat burning foods and do some exercise, it will boost your metabolism and burn calories (fat) at a faster rate for several hours even after exercise.

      Apples

Apples are rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants need to fight disease. Apples are a fat burning food which will help shed and maintain extra pounds. Apples are simply terrific to deal with losing the fat. Pectin in apple restricts the cells to absorb the fat; and also encourages water absorption from the food which helps in releasing the fat deposits from the body.

      Beets

Beets are a strong diuretic that focuses on the liver and kidneys. Beets flush out floating body fats. Beets flush out floating body fats and cleanse blood corpuscles that can contain fat deposits. Beets also contain chlorine that stimulates the lymph, which helps flush out fatty deposits.

      Garlic

Garlic is known to break down fat deposits and is also an antiseptic and an antibiotic, making it a good component of any diet. Chili and cayenne peppers are considered fat burning foods and will also spice up some otherwise bland dishes. Garlic – A natural diuretic containing mustard oils that create a cleansing action in the body.

      Green Tea

Green tea burners and diet supplements have been found to be very effective in lowering cholesterol so as to reduce the chances of stroke. By increasing the rate of calorie burning, green tea also helps in weight loss. Green tea is often cited as having the most potential. Although it is somewhat unclear as to weather it is the ingredients in the green tea that give benefits, or the green tea as a source of caffeine.

      Grapefruit

Grapefruit has been shown to reduce insulin levels. If you are one of the many who are insulin resistant and your body is overloaded with insulin, try having half a grapefruit before each meal. Grapefruit may bring back memories of fad diets-gone bad, but the citrus fruit may actually help improve insulin levels, making us feel less hungry. Big on satiety from its high fiber and water content, grapefruit’s low in calories and can aid weight loss when incorporated into a healthy diet.

      Eat More Fruit

In studies of peoples eating habits it was noticed that fruit eaters ate fewer calories overall, this could be because having a snack a couple of times a day with three reasonable meals will help to maintain a good blood sugar level, which helps to control your hunger.

So, next time you need to satisfy a sugar craving, reach for this low-calorie, high-fiber snack. Fruits like apples, peaches, grapefruits, and oranges, at only 60-80 calories apiece (or less), are a great addition to almost any nutritional plan. Just make sure the majority of your carbohydrates are of the complex type. Fruits make for great snacks and should replace the high fat snacks that we normally eat.

Fruits rich in vitamin C like limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruit and tangerines have fat burning properties. Some of the other fat burning foods are asparagus, beet root, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, apple, blueberries, and watermelon.
      Eat More Protein

Eating protein can help you burn fat. One of the reasons is that it requires a lot of energy to digest protein and the body burns calories to get that energy.

      Finally

Don’t expect fat burning foods to be

What is the best/fastest way to boost your metabolism?
Mk I'm not going on all those silly diets and stuff what is the best and fastest way to boost your metabolism? Me and my friend are wanting to raise our metabolisms together so we can help one another. So we're doing it now, but we dont know how. A little help Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      1. Eat breakfast! Food first thing in the morning kick-starts your metabolism and keeps it going, so the body won't think it's being starved.

      2. Drink tons of water! This one's self explanatory.

      3. Don't skip meals to diet! The body will then think it's being starved, so the metabolism slows down in order to save the remaining food left in the body. (reference to number 1)

      4. Do lots of exercise! The extra muscle built up from the exercise will burn/replace any fat in the body and helps increase the metabolism.

      5. Eat small meals between every 2-3 hours! This keeps the body's digestive system busy with digesting food, so the metabolism quickens. I suggest a 300-500 calorie breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a 100 calorie snack between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner.

  45. QUESTION:
Example of daily diet to boost metabolism?

Here's my recipe for my high protein complex carb shake:

      1 banana
      1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup skim milk or soy milk
      1 Tablespoon bee pollen
      Ice blended to desired consistency.

I have a shake first thing in the morning. Then I have a protein bar a couple hours later. Another shake around noon. Some fruit a couple hours later. A healthy meal for supper. Then I have another shake about 30 minutes before bed. This will keep your metabolism up.

The reason I use bee pollen is for the natural B vitamins and it is also higher in protein than whey. It contains vitamins C and E. Plus trace minerals and contains complex carbohydrates. So you see you have a complete food in one tablespoon mixed in a shake. It will give your shake kind of a nutty taste. I get my bee pollen from beeroyalproducts.com because I have found they have the freshest and purest on the market. Also this is where I got the recipe.lol

  46. QUESTION:
How much do I need to eat in order to boost my metabolism?
I've done lots of research into fitness and such over the past few weeks and one theme I've noticed is the idea of eating every 3 or so hours to keep your metabolism high. However, what is required to boost it? For instance will a box of raisins be enough? How about liquids, would soup or milk have the same effect?

    • ANSWER:
I eat as much as a want every day and i maintain a healthy weight and figure. I at least have a protein shake for breakfast that way my metabolism gets started then I consume mostly meals containing meat and i have a few snacks throughout the day, and i only weight-lift for like 20 minutes a day. By gaining muscle a human body naturally uses more calories. So you don't need much to get a faster metabolism a box of raisins will do but in order to maximize eat protein and weight-lift on top of that.

the best, most healthful way to increase your metabolism is with exercise. if you are trying to lose body fat by boosting your metabolism to boos the metabolism of your muscle cells which can be trained to burn fat. One good way to teach your muscles to burn fat is to do high intensity interval training (HIIT)

HIIT is 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds of rest, repeated 5 to 8 times. (sometimes called the Tabata method) Only 3 sessions per week should be done to let your body recover between sessions. There are many scientific studies using this method after the first study by Tabata in 1994. Tabata demonstrated significant body fat loss using HIIT after 2 months of 3 times per week workouts.

If you search YouTube for High intensity interval training you can see the wide variety of exercise that can be done during the 20 seconds of exercise. Most gym workouts are not intense enough to burn significant fat. The lower intensity gym exercises are good for other things and are not necessarily designed specifically to burn fat.

Dieting will not trigger your body to burn fat, in fact, cutting back on calories will cause your body to store fat and only give it up with extreme reluctance, and your body will pack on fat as soon as you eat a little extra. Stay away from any food or drink that contains high fructose corn syrup because HFCS is very easy for your liver to turn it into fat.

the video link below has a nice explanation of the Tabata method with some sample exercises.

I've been doing HIIT for about a year and it works great, I don't have much fat. I jump rope and do some of the other exercises in the video. I've managed to get up to 20 jumps for the 5 repeats. I jump with both feet together to get high off the ground. It is amazing how much effort it takes to jump rope this way! (male, 5'10" 145 pounds) and I am active all day and sleep very well.
