7 Ways to Boost Metabolism Fast and Slash Your Body Fat

Author: Jason Oh

The best ways to boost metabolism is to get the right nutrition to fuel your body, feed the muscle - and use 'Total Body' workouts to burn the fat and turbo charge your metabolism.

Fact is, if you don't eat in a healthy manner, your body will not respond to the way it needs to burn the body fat, and function. Good nutrition is the key to kick starting your metabolism and allowing the body to burn fat and develop strength.

Your well-being is the key to a healthier body, so focus on yourself and let the results take care of itself. Below are some tips to boost your metabolism now-

Ways To Boost Metabolism Fast

1. Never skip breakfast and try to get healthy carbs to power up your body before 2 pm - and lighten up on your energy meals towards the end of the day. For dinner go for lean meat and leafy vegetables.

2 .Downsize your treats - make treats miniature, instead of giving them up altogether. Instead of trying to live without dessert, choose smaller portions - like 1 piece of an apple crumble baked pie or a small bar of chocolate. Get your sugar hit without dangerous left overs.

3. Fiber fitness - because men eat less salad than women they are more likely to suffer constipation. Simple remedies are adding bran to your breakfast cereal, drinking more water, bulking up those lunch time with wholemeal sandwiches that includes salad and ensuring you include a range of veggies on your dinner plate. apart from cutting your bathroom time, fiber is filling and lessens the cravings. Reduce the cravings, you will reduce the belly fat. As always try to get your 2 servings of fruits and 5 servings of veggies a day.

4. Strength training - bigger muscles create a smaller body. Muscle burns calories so you can actually eat more food without gaining weight, and strength training is the only way to do this. you need to lift weights or use other equipment that forces you to work your muscles against resistance so that they work harder than they're used to. You don't have to spend hours working out to increase muscle mass - 30 minutes 3 times a week will do it. If visiting a gym is an issue, try body weight exercises like the push ups, the plank and lunges with little rest in between - it's a great way to measure and improve your strength.

5. Boring cardios, stay away! For beginners, any exercise is great - but the best way to slash your body fat is to look at High Variable Interval training and challenging resistance training. Studies have shown that a combination high variable training will boost your metabolism during and after a workout!

6.As your fitness improves, your body becomes more efficient, meaning you expend less energy in a 30 minute run than when you first started. So you've got to shake things up a bit. Play with intensity of what you're doing, and if you can, change your routine. For example, if you walk regularly, try breaking it up with spurts of jogging, or add hills and stairs to your daily walk. Switching intensity will challenge you more than just staying at the same pace. As well as increasing your likelihood of losing weight, you're most likely to stay motivated if you participate in a range of activities. So, instead of running four times a week, why not cycle, do some laps at your local pool or play a game of tennis!

7. Try to cut out or reduce the sugary drinks including the diet kinds. Those sugar fixes are not great for the body. Instead, just stick to calorie free water, green tea and low fat smoothies.

The above tips are just of the ways to boost metabolism fast, and are highly recommended to help you change the way you eat and train. Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is a good yet inexpensive product to boost metabolism for women?
I am looking for one that works, obliviously and if possible not make me hyperactive. I have enough trouble sleeping as is.
I know that exercise and eating small meals throughout the day increase metabolism. I am just looking for something else to help those along. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Green tea should help you. Its all natural ;) !!!!!
      Try it.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best way to lose weight and boost metabolism?
I know you need to burn more calories than you consume but how low can you go with calories before your metabolism is messed up?
And just how much exercise should you do in one day? And do you have to do it all at once or can you break it up?
And what are the best foods in the world to eat?

    • ANSWER:
Well, it depends on your build. You shouldn't go below 1200 calories, period, or your body goes into starvation mode. I'd suggest cutting out no more than 500 calories from your day, period.

You should do your exercise all at once-- unless you're doing two longer sessions. For example, I do cardio every day (30-45 minutes straight), and then I every other day I do an hour, later, of weight training.

As far as foods are concerned, there are too many. I personally love low-fat yogurt. :D

  3. QUESTION:
How to boost metabolism back to normal?
I am a 16 year old girl and 5'4 and around 123ish pounds. i am very muscular. though, last year i decreased my calories to betwwen 0 and 600ish on a particular day. i lost a lot of weight, but then my parents discovered what was going on and long story short i then had to eat more. after lots of research, i know this slowed my metabolism. i was unaware at the time. any tips on how i can rev my metabolism again, and how long it will take?

    • ANSWER:
When you start eating more, the body (though not right away) will soon adjust to that calorie amount and your metabolism will boost itself so to speak.

The best advice I can give you if you want to maintain a diet and still keep your metabolism revving is to eat say.. 600 calories one day, the next 1000... the next 1400. Then go back to 600 and start over. Because if you stay at 600 for a long time, your body switches to that mode. But this way it stays at 1400 (or whatever your top is).

And of course.. exercise.. Nothing boosts metabolism like exercise. Especially cardio.

You should also calculate your daily caloric requirement (its available everywhere online) because from that you will determine your max. I used 1400 in the above example.

  4. QUESTION:
Any good ways to boost metabolism for a middle age female?
I am beginning menopause and having a terrible time losing weight, it's coming off a pound a week but GAWD I'm working for that! Has anyone had any success with a metabolism accelerator actually working? Not looking for a pill to take, more along natural lines of diet or herbal supplements. Thanks!

(I asked this yesterday but only got a few answers, was hoping some fitness people are on today that could help me, appreciate all the advice!)

    • ANSWER:
While exercise and eating 5-6 times a day will help in not only boosting you metabolism and mitigating insulin secretion, drinking water has been proven to be helpful as well.
Despite the fact that most diets call for drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day, few studies have been done to determine if the practice actually speeds weight loss. In an effort to answer this question, Michael Boschmann, MD, and colleagues from Berlin's Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center tracked energy expenditures among seven men and seven women who were healthy and not overweight.

After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water, the subjects' metabolic rates -- or the rate at which calories are burned -- increased by 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of water consumption and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes.

The study also showed that the increase in metabolic rate differed in men and women. In men, burning more fat fueled the increase in metabolism, whereas in women, an increased breakdown of carbohydrates caused the increase in metabolism seen.

The researchers estimate that over the course of a year, a person who increases his water consumption by 1.5 liters a day would burn an extra 17,400 calories, for a weight loss of approximately five pounds. They note that up to 40% of the increase in calorie burning is caused by the body's attempt to heat the ingested water. The findings are reported in the December issue of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
You must maintain a healthy lower calorie diet.Eat less carbohydrates and more whole foods and protein.Protein is helpful because it's the highest thermic food.

Going for a walk in the evening can be helpful but weight training is one of the best exercises you can do to lose weight.

One of the ways this works is by stimulating new muscle growth thus metabolizing more calories even at rest(about 50 cal per pound of muscle).
The fact of the matter is you MUST just stick with it.Following some of the guidelines here will help.
It is also unnecessary to drink 8 8 ounce glasses of water per day.

Calculate you BMR and consume less calories than you burn.

Consider some low carb protein bars.Stay away from granola and those type snacks.
This will dispel that stupid cabbage nonsense among other things. This is excerpted from a Yahoo! Health e mail.
The following diet myths come up over and over again at my nutrition center. My next two blog entries will help set the record straight. Hope you find this helpful!

If you eat late at night, the food turns straight into fat.

Not true.If your overall calories are appropriate for weight loss, you certainly can eat something after dinner. Late night calories will ultimately get used the next day (and even while you sleep).

However, for the sake of energy, it is always better to eat your calories during the day when your body needs the fuel. Plus, eating consistently throughout the day will stabilize blood sugar levels -- so you’ll feel energized and experience fewer cravings. If you are going to snack after dinner, I suggest choosing something 250 calories or less.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are more nutritious than frozen.

Not necessarily. Frozen can be a great produce option (just avoid varieties with added salt, sugar, and sauce). Frozen foods are picked in the peak of ripeness, then frozen. You can eat them as you need them -- and most of the nutrients are locked in. On the other hand, fresh fruit and vegetables are typically harvested before they ripen, and can have nutrient variability. Also, the longer fresh produce sits around in your fridge, the less nutrients it will contain.

Bottom line: Buy both fresh and frozen and eat as much as you can.

Cravings are your body's way of telling you it needs something.

This has never been proven. You normally crave what you like to eat (or smell or see someone else eating). Also, hormonal changes are sometimes responsible for food cravings. Ice cream and pickles anyone?

Any type of water is always better than soda.

No. There are a few caloric waters with sexy marketing ploys. In fact, some brands have quite a bit of sugar. Always check labels.

Certain foods, like grapefruit, celery, or cabbage soup can burn fat and make you lose weight.

These are anecdotal stories that have no scientific back up. It’s true these foods are low in calories, but they do NOT actually burn fat

The combination of caffeine and aspirin before a work out will help to mobilize fat into your blood stream for use as fuel. Most herbal products with the exeption of ephedra do nothing for your metabolism.Ephedra has been banned by the FDA once again.
Things like guarana and gotu kola only speed metabolism because of the caffeine they contain.Dehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA) may help people above the age of 35 to regulate their endocrine system

  5. QUESTION:
What natural things help boost metabolism?
I know the obvious is exercise, but what foods and supplements can be taken to increase metabolism. What stimulates energy?

    • ANSWER:
Exercise helps with energy yes, but it does nothing to your metabolism. You also cannot effect your metabolism with food. If you eat health and exercise you will feel better and you might even lose some weight but your metabolism will never change.

  6. QUESTION:
Is there a healthy way to boost metabolism and slim thighs?
    Scenario:

A teenager with a height of about 5'2" and a weight of 95 pounds. She has rather thick thighs. She has a slim upper body. Her hands and lips turn purple when she is cold (thirty something degrees F).

    Question:

Is there something wrong with her metabolism? Why can't she keep herself warm, and why can't she slim those thighs?

    Any solutions? Thank you.
She's not very skinny. She's slightly fatter than the average person. I am not sure adding more calories would help her? Or am I not getting this?

    • ANSWER:
There's nothing wrong with the girl's metabolism.

The fact that her thighs are thick could be mainly due to her body shape - if she's prone to be pear-shaped, she would tend to have thicker thighs.

Cardio exercise and thigh strengthening exercise can help slim down the size of her thighs. And eating a healthy diet low in fat helps too.

Let her go running, walking, swimming, biking, jogging, dancing....(let her choose one exercise she loves and enjoys doing) to speed up her metabolism that would cause her to have higher fat-burning capacity to burn off excess fat from her entire body (that includes the fat in her thighs too....), to lose weight.

Then this thigh strengthening program can help to tighten and firm up her thigh muscles, which can "show " after the layer of fat has been blasted away by the power of cardio exercise: http://www.perfect-body-toning.com/thigh-exercises.html

The reason she's feeling cold - could be due to her being anemic (the condition of having lower than normal the number of red blood cells or lower than normal the quantity of hemoglobin in the blood; hence the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood is reduced).

Get her to eat food rich in iron (green leafy vegetables, lean cut of red meat, protein, beans and nuts....).

  7. QUESTION:
Best time to drink grapefruit juice to boost metabolism and burn fat?
ASSUMING that grapefruit juice DOES speed metabolism and burn fat, when is the most effective time to drink it?

Morning? Night? Before meal? After meal?

    • ANSWER:
grapefruits do have som ability to boost metabolism but it is best to actually have the grapefruit instead of grapefruit juice. Grapefruit is best in the morning as part of your breakfast. In fact i would discourage any citrus not on an empty stomach becuase it gives people gas... but grapefruit is best on empty stomach first thing in the mornng for weight loss benefit. of course you still need to eat healthy the rest of the time and also exercise

An hour or so before you begin exercise try eating foods that contain a balance 1/2 carbs, 1/4 protein, and 1/4 fat. This should provide a readily sustained energy for you long rides. There is also some support for the use of glutamine, an amino acid, which helps with muscular endurance and post-exercise muscle soreness. 25. QUESTION:
    How to boost metabolism?
Arre there any natural remedies to boost metbolism? I think I'm in starvation mode any need a meal plan. I'm a 15 year old girl, 5'2, 106/`07 pounds. Also, are there any natural laxatives?

    • ANSWER:
Dieters often complain that they can’t lose weight because they have
a “slow metabolism.” Unfortunately, many companies capitalize on this
misconception by marketing products that promise to give consumers a
so called “metabolic advantage” that helps melt away the pounds.
They are useless. There are things you can't control about your
metabolism, and no product ever will. On the other hand, there are
simple natural techniques, which will allow you to do it.
What you can’t control about your metabolism:
Age: Metabolism slows about 5 percent for each decade after 40.
That’s because as we get older, we tend to lose muscle and gain body
fat. Lean muscle mass is more metabolically active than fat tissue. So
when you lose muscle mass, your metabolism slows down.
Gender: Men generally have faster metabolisms than women because
they’re larger and have less body fat. Men’s basal metabolic rate is
estimated to be 10 percent to 15 percent higher than women’s.
Hypothyroidism: An underactive thyroid will slow down your metabolism
and ultimately lead to weight gain. The good news is that a simple
blood test can determine whether you have this condition or not. If
you do, you can control it with the proper medication.
Genetics: Some people are lucky enough to be born with speedy
metabolisms — and others are not.
What you can control about your metabolism: Diet

Don’t eat fewer than 1,000 calories a day. Your body and metabolism
thrive on food. When you fast or crash diet, your metabolism will slow
down in order to conserve energy. Imagine your metabolism as a blazing
fire. If the fire burns consistently with the appropriate amount of
high-quality wood, it will burn at a steady rate. But if it doesn’t
have enough wood, the fire goes out. If it has too much wood, it can
get out control — just like your waistline!
Eat every four to five hours. Our bodies work hard to digest and
absorb the foods we eat, and your metabolism revs up in response.
This is called the thermic effect of food. Take full advantage of this
and schedule meals and snacks every four to five hours.
Make breakfast a priority. Studies show that people who regularly eat
a healthy breakfast within two hours of rising are more likely to
control their weight. This may be because you’re lifting your
metabolic rate after it’s been in a “resting phase” during the night.
Eat protein with every meal: All foods create a thermic effect and
will slightly boost your metabolism. However, eating protein gives
your body a bigger metabolic boost than eating carbohydrates or fats.
Plus, eating enough protein will ensure you’ll maintain and build
muscle mass. (Remember, the more muscle mass you have, the greater
your metabolic rate). Make sure to incorporate lean protein into most
      every meal.
Best protein sources: fish, chicken breast, turkey breast, lean red
meat, skim milk, nonfat yogurt, eggs and egg substitutes, tofu, beans,
      and lentils.

      Meal Examples:

      Breakfast: yogurt with fresh fruit
Lunch: turkey burger on whole-grain bun and a salad
Dinner: grilled chicken with vegetables and a baked potato
      Exercise

Do aerobic exercise four to five days a week. Aerobic activities,
such as running, brisk walking, swimming and bike riding, burn
calories and increase metabolism while you’re working out. Several
studies show that aerobic activities cause your metabolism to stay at
an elevated level for a period of time after you have finished
      exercising.
Work in strength-training exercise two to three days a week. Lifting
weights and other strengthening activities, such as doing push-ups or
crunches, on a regular basis will actually boost your resting
metabolism all day. That’s because these activities build muscle. And
once again, muscle burns more calories than body fat. In fact, if you
have more muscle, you burn more calories — even if you’re sitting
      still.
When it comes to supplements, I do not recommend them. The
ingredients that are effective tend to boost metabolism only slightly
and they can be risky. High doses of stimulants can make you jittery,
and increase heart rate and blood pressure.
The bottom line: The safest and most effective way to boost your
metabolism is to eat an appropriate amount of food every four to five
hours, incorporate a portion of lean protein into each meal, and
      exercise regularly!
Senna, dry fruit and prunes are natural laxatives, but you do not need them.

  26. QUESTION:
how to boost metabolism and work out BMI?
I am 16 years old, im about 5"3 at the most and i weigh 9 stones.
I want to know how much weight i should lose, if im classed as overweight or what ever?

I would also like to know, what food, methods (apart from exercise, because i know that one) will boost my metabolism
    mine is quite slow!

I also do not want to take diet pills!
    I just want to lose weight :( :( :(

    • ANSWER:
First off, you are not classified as overweight.
An adult who is 126 pounds or 9 stones
and is 5 feet 3 inches tall has
a body mass index of 22.4.

That's great! An adult with a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered to have a healthy bmi.

These numbers that are given for BMI can be totally wrong though, When I was 19yo and weighed 190lbs it said I was slightly overweight, it was because I had muscle and since muscle weights more than fat it was skewed!
